To the End of the World - Duo93 Adventure | Around the World

Globetrotters equipped by Touratech are on the road around the world, testing equipment made in Niedereschach under the toughest conditions. We introduce some of them and let these travellers take us to some of the coolest motorcycle destinations worldwide.

After the first part of our world tour, the Wild North Atlantic Track, taking in Iceland, Ireland and Scotland, a southern continent with some sun and lots of contrasts was to be our next destination.

Our original itinerary included several border crossings and Andean crossings between Chile and Argentina on the way from Santiago de Chile to Tierra del Fuego. However, due to the Corona regulations of these two countries, all crossings were closed to tourists except for two border posts in the north and south. In retrospect, we're happy about this, because otherwise we wouldn't have got to know so many impressive regions of Chile.

Santiago de Chile welcomed us with sunshine and temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. First, we followed the call of Valle Nevado, east of Santiago – a ski area that reaches an altitude of almost 3000 metres. After that, we continued on the Ruta del Mar past many towns worth seeing, such as Pichilemu and Dichato, until we reached Concepción.

We were totally overwhelmed by Chilean hospitality. Almost every day, Chilean motorcycle and travel enthusiasts invited us in. While we were looking for a way to celebrate New Year's Eve in Dichato, a KTM-loving rider found us and invited us to his home, an offer we couldn't refuse. He turned out to be an insider, so together we planned our route to the south, with him giving us many valuable tips for things we would never have found out about by searching the internet.

Through a breathtaking setting of lakes, mountains, volcanoes and the bizarre Araucaria, we followed the Interlagos route on the Chilean side to Puerto Montt.

After a detour to the Chiloe Peninsula and a visit to a penguin colony with Magellan and Humboldt penguins, we finally set off, south of Puerto Montt, on the infamous Carretera Austral, also known as Ruta 7.

Covering some 1240 kilometres between Puerto Montt and its terminus at Villa O'Higgins, this route leads through untouched wilderness, passing mighty glaciers, crystal-clear lagoons and snow-covered volcanic peaks. A large part of it leads over tracks that demanded a lot from us, our machines and our equipment. The Ruta 7 is pure adventure and was one of the highlights of our trip.

To move further south on the Chilean side, we needed to get a place on the ferry from Caleta Yungay to Puerto Natales. As all tickets were booked out until April, it was only through luck that we managed to board the ferry as what might be termed "stowaways".

When we visited the most famous Chilean national park, Torres del Paine, in the south of Patagonia, we had to fight against massive crosswinds that made it almost impossible to ride our motorcycles, especially on unpaved roads. However, the unique scenery with the bizarre rocky peaks as well as the blue shimmering icebergs and crystal-clear rivers was far more than just compensation for our exertions.

The "end of the world" was now within reach. After an adventurous border crossing between Chile and Argentina, we finally reached Ushuaia, the most important town in Tierra del Fuego and supposedly the southernmost city in the world.
